Another Screenshot App? I Turned It Around.

How to Turn Generic Apps Around and Make Some Real Money

The App We Are Analyzing

Another week, another SaaS postmortem.

I help founders who spill their blood and sweat on their businesses only to watch $0 on their Stripe dashboard.

We don’t want that.

So let’s see what went wrong and how to fix it.

Today we’re analyzing a Screenshot App.

To be honest when I first saw it, I was like — NO NOT ANOTHER ONE!

But let’s keep an open mind and start.

The 30-Second Money Grab Audit

First impression?

I rated it 7/10 on the “will-I-throw-my-money-at-you” scale.

But why?

1. We know it is AI, man!

The App we are Analyzing

“Revolutionize your visual creation process. Capture flawless screenshots or instantly generate stunning logos, avatars, headers, and more — all in seconds.”

Yeah… NO.

It’s a screenshot app, how exactly is it revolutionizing?

And okay, it might have “powerful generators” but what exactly?

Even if you are not a copywriter, what you would write for your headline and subheadline would be much better than what AI writes.

Something like

Headline — From Ugly Screenshots, Logos, Graphics to ones that make a difference in 3 seconds

Subheadline — Nope, you don’t need to be a designer, you just need to know how to click.

2. My hopes are falling

Key Features

As I scroll down, recovering from the AI headline, I see key features.

Now, this could have been a really interesting section, but there’s a falling block animation here..what?

That’s not doing anything for me!!!

It’s like those side plots in a movie..that if you remove, nothing would change in the ending.

Show me the damn generators and screenshots.

3. It gets better before it ends?

I scroll down more and reach here

The Hero Section?

Love the No Ads, No Login thing, and I'm suddenly starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel..

But the page is over?

After that, it’s just buy me a coffee plug and some testimonials.

Why’d you do that to me?

I wanted to see what it does and how I can use it. Ugh!

4. The Actual App

Since I didn’t get much from the page, I went ahead and tried the app.

And it’s pretty good.

It can make pretty code snippets

Pretty code snippets

Ofcourse make the screenshots look pretty

Screenshotting

And can generate logos for your UI UX apps

Logo generator

Even profile pictures and headers for your apps

The Dashboard

All in all it’s a pretty good app yeah?

But there’s an issue with the messaging and positioning

  • Since it was first branded as a screenshot app, I automatically related it to brandbird, which is an app like this

  • However, its mojo lies in the pretty code snippets, the logos devs can use, and more

5. The Rebrand

If I were the founder, I’d rebrand it as a Developer Graphics app.

For Founders and indiehackers. Especially those with growing social media accounts.

Why?

  • They rarely like to use Canva and Figma

  • They’re not well-versed with graphics apps like Brandbird since they don’t do graphics much

  • They would use a lot of screenshots, code snippets to post online

  • The logo generator would actually be used in their projects

  • The profile and header generator is a PLUS given they’re not Canva Figma savvy

It’s perfect for them.

And ofcourse, I’d change the landing page to

  • Write the headline and subheadline myself

  • Remove the falling blocks animation

  • Show GIFs of all the generators in that section

  • Show the uses section for founders

  • And then add testimonials

It’s a great app, I loved the UI

Just the landing page needs tweaks.

Now we’ll go to our last section….

The Million Dollar Question

Yes, your app can be used by everyone, it’s a graphic app.

But you should ask yourself as a founder/developer…

Who will benefit from this app THE MOST?

What segment does not use/ is not happy with the current competitors?

You might have a very simple app…

I mean, I can do everything this app does on Canva

But for someone who’s a developer with limited patience and skills

This is a godsend.

Positioning is everything.

It can change your simple app to something perfect for a segment.

Find that angle.

With this, it’s a wrap.

TLDR

  1. Write the headline and subheadline, no matter how bad a writer you are. It’ll be better than an AI.

  2. Do not add animations if they don’t do anything for you.

  3. Show the damned features in gif.

  4. Show the damned uses too!

  5. If it’s a generic app, think about what niche people or segment would use this the most.

  6. Think about your competitors. Who would find it very hard to use them? Who would not know they exist? Those could be your target audience.

Final Thoughts

Screenie is a great app. Just need some positioning rebrand and an hour's work on the landing page and it’ll be perfect.

Sometimes apps just need little tweaks to be a jackpot for someone and more than a jackpot for a founder.

That’s my favorite part of doing SaaS audits:
Helping founders see the gold they’re sitting on.

I do these for my clients and also do in-depth differential diagnosis like this
